Works by Lodovico Viadana, Antonio Rigatti, and instrumental music in the stylus phantasticus

The early 17th century in northern Italy was a time of profound musical transformation. While secular forms such as the madrigal explored new stylistic directions, sacred music, too, underwent significant change. Lodovico Viadana’s Missa Dominicalis, likely composed in Cremona, is an early example of the use of solo voices accompanied by basso continuo in the Catholic liturgy.

The psalm settings of Giovanni Rigatti, composed a generation later, reveal how expressive melodic lines and virtuosic figurations began to take the place of strict Renaissance counterpoint. The programme is complemented by instrumental works in the stylus phantasticus by Castello, Marini, and Uccellini—music marked by improvisatory freedom and vivid sonic imagination.
