Musical life during the Grand Siècle was profoundly shaped by the reign of the Sun King. As early as the beginning of the 17th century, a distinctive musical taste began to emerge, whose stylistic characteristics would endure well into the mid-18th century. Rich tonal colors, splendid ornamentation, refined polyphony, and “l’harmonie douce et voluptueuse” are the hallmarks of this music.

One of the most important representatives of this style was Henri Du Mont, whose music—praised across Europe for its polyphonic texture and tasteful harmonies—has since fallen into obscurity. Yet when performed with appropriate ornamentation and diminutions, as described in historical sources, this music reveals its full beauty.
