Slovak musicians and their Hungarian and Haná dances enjoyed great popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries. They became part of festive occasions, including celebrations at the court of Prince Esterházy. These musicians also held the rare privilege of being allowed to travel and perform freely throughout the Habsburg Empire.
Many of these dances are preserved in the Uhrovska Collection from 1730. In this concert, they are heard alongside the National Dances (Ballet) by Georg Daniel Speer from his Musikalisch-Türckischer Eulen-Spiegel. In contrast to this lively dance music, the works of Samuel Friedrich Capricornus offer a more dreamy, poetic character with a touch of improvisational freedom.
